Hi Everybody!
Well, the fishing season is well underway! Our season opener was this past Saturday-May 7th. I have been chasing mostly Smallmouth Bass and Walleyes. It’s an exciting time up here in Door County-there are a lot of fishermen here preparing and pre-fishing for one of our county’s largest tournaments-The Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament. We wish them all the best of luck!
The water temperatures where I have been fishing (mostly the greater Sturgeon Bay areas: Sand Bay, Sherwood Point, Flats) has been close to the 50 degree mark, which is a pretty warm opener temp for up here. Warmest water I’ve seen has been 54. Most of the bass I have been catching are in the 3-7 FOW range. For bass, I’ve been throwing a lot of plastics-and on choppier water days-they get a little more aggressive and I like to throw jerk baits at them. I have been catching some pretty decent numbers of bass, but haven’t seen anything too big where I’ve been fishing. But, I know those fish are swimming and I tip my hat to some of the fishermen and women out there who are going to land a giant bass this season! As fishermen, we all hope it’s going to be us personally, but, in all honesty, I’m just as happy for a fellow angler to land a GIANT on my home body of water!! Go gettem’!
For walleye, when jigging or casting, you typically will want to position the boat in a depth where you can’t see the bottom (of course there are some exceptions, but that’s a general starting point). My bait of choice has been a hair jig, but I also will use a 1/8-3/8 oz jig head with a plastic or blade baits too. Trolling is also another great technique in Door County and the Bay of Green Bay, of course, too. Just remember to never troll into the wind/waves and always troll with the current. I like Flicker Shads or Flicker Minnows, Husky Jerks, etc. Areas to target for trolling: Henderson’s Point, Sherwood Point, the shoreline north of Olde Stone Quarry are good places to begin. Best of luck to all the anglers out there!
