Well, the fishing season is well underway! Our season opener was this past Saturday-May 7th. I have been chasing mostly Smallmouth Bass and Walleyes. It's an exciting time up here in Door County-there are a lot of fishermen here preparing and pre-fishing for one of our county's largest tournaments-The Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament. We wish them all the best of luck!
The water temperatures where I have been fishing (mostly the greater Sturgeon Bay areas: Sand Bay, Sherwood Point, Flats) has been close to the 50 degree mark, which is a pretty warm opener temp for up here. Warmest water I've seen has been 54. Most of the bass I have been catching are in the 3-7 FOW range. For bass, I've been throwing a lot of plastics-and on choppier water days-they get a little more aggressive and I like to throw jerk baits at them. I have been catching some pretty decent numbers of bass, but haven't seen anything too big where I've been fishing. But, I know those fish are swimming and I tip my hat to some of the fishermen and women out there who are going to land a giant bass this season! As fishermen, we all hope it's going to be us personally, but, in all honesty, I'm just as happy for a fellow angler to land a GIANT on my home body of water!! Go gettem'!
For walleye, when jigging or casting, you typically will want to position the boat in a depth where you can't see the bottom (of course there are some exceptions, but that's a general starting point). My bait of choice has been a hair jig, but I also will use a 1/8-3/8 oz jig head with a plastic or blade baits too. Trolling is also another great technique in Door County and the Bay of Green Bay, of course, too. Just remember to never troll into the wind/waves and always troll with the current. I like Flicker Shads or Flicker Minnows, Husky Jerks, etc. Areas to target for trolling: Henderson's Point, Sherwood Point, the shoreline north of Olde Stone Quarry are good places to begin. Best of luck to all the anglers out there!

In just a few days, May 2nd, Wisconsin's fishing season officially opens! With forecasts in the 60's and 70's and not much wind, this could be one of the best fishing openers we've seen weather-wise! The Walleye limit will go from 1 to 5 fish per person, and our world-renowned Smallmouth fishery officially opens as well! (For complete listing of regulations, CLICK HERE) Water temps are in the mid-high 40's, and we have been having some AWESOME days catching big walleyes-this one pictured below (28.5") was just caught and released a few moments ago (4/28/15). As we approach our busiest season of open water guiding the waters of Door County, we are optimistic for another successful fishing season. Best of luck to you this spring fishing season, and remember to CPR-Catch, Photo, Release! Although this winter started off a mild one in Door County, it seems as though Jack Frost has blasted us with full force the last few weeks. Listening to the news this morning, the weatherman stated this may be another record-setting year for the amount of ice coverage on the Great Lakes-now approaching over 85%. That means our Door County Ice Fishing season will be another long one! If you haven't had the opportunity to come up ice fishing this season, there's still time! We also have one more event scheduled this season-our Ice Walleye School, March 13-15, 2015. Hosted by Dale Stroschein at the Sand Bay Beach Resort, you will learn the tips, tactics and locations that have made Dale a successful and awarded (former World Record Holder for a Walleye caught through the Ice!!) ice walleye angler. So, have no fear, there still is LOTS of time yet to get your Door County Ice Fishing trip in yet this season! Image below was taken off the NOAA Coastwatch site (satellite imagery from 2/23/15) showing the amount of ice cover on the Bay of Green Bay, WI.
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND…Dale will be offering four open water schools-two Smallmouth and two Walleye-in 2015! Actual dates TBD, but check back soon!! It's looking like May and October will be the host months for these schools! Hope to see you at one of these great events geared to help you enjoy and learn more about Door County's great and diverse fishery!
